Ball pool baubles

If you, like me, have a toddler, or young child (or a cat) you know what a nightmare christmas decorations can be. so much stuff that can be broken, or choked on, or is a strangulation risk… Well, I was looking for some baubles that my toddler could play with, without breaking them. and here they are.

What you need:

ball pool balls – the hollow plastic type (although this could be done with the polystyrene balls, but they could be broken…)
A long needle – I opted for a sack needle, but any that are long enough to pierce both sides of the ball will work.
Nice string or ribbon – I went for think craft string, but whatever you chose, make sure you can thread it through the needle.

Task 1: The whole lot

So this is really simple

Thread your needle. I’m not going to tell you how to do that… if youre really stuck, ask a relative, or google

Line up where you want to go into your bauble. For me, this was right on the seam where the 2 halves joined. But not all balls have this, or you may want to just go through at a different point for aesthetics. you decide

Push the needle all the way through the ball, and pull it out on the other side. Pull the loop out the string so you have 1 length running through the ball

Remove the pin, tie a knot in the string, cut the part at the other end to length and tie a loop in the end to hang it on.

and with that your baubles are finished. Yes it really is that simple. When I worked it out I was really a “DUH why didn’t I think of that before” moment…

Task 2: Conclusion

There we go, now wasn’t that easy?

But they are plain? Boring? I hear you say. Well, yes, yes they are. For me, that’s exactly what I wanted. Nothing to break off and become a choking hazard for my 18 month old.

Some ideas for decoration are:

Ribbon round the perimeter – Personally, I’d tack it in place with the thread being run to hang it on. Simply push the needle through the ribbon as well
Gem on the top/bottom – Threaded on the hanging string and tied in place.
Glitter – dip in glue, and then glitter or sand? Not tried so I cant say

Any other suggestions are welcome :)
